SOUND BALANCE is a new musical developmental reading and commissioning initiative, exclusively for women and nonbinary writers and composers. The initiative is a partnership between GLG, the first (and only) U.S.-based organization dedicated to developing and producing musical theater by women and non-binary writers and composers, and leading creative and producing professionals across theater, film and television whose work is related to musical theater. The program is a direct extension of GLG’s mission: To close the gender gap in musical theater authorship, and connect early career creators with those successfully developing musical content both in theater and other mediums.
SUBMISSION GUIDELINES
Sound Balance is open to women and nonbinary integrated musical theater writers (meaning those individuals who write book, music and lyrics solo) or writing teams (consisting of composer, lyricist, bookwriter, or some combination of the above). To apply, applicants must submit the following work samples from a musical theater piece. Submissions will be open until 11:59 PM ET on January 15, 2025, or when 250 submissions are received:

-
A 20-25-page script excerpt (PDF format)
-
5 song demos (.mp3, .mp4, or .wav format)
-
Lyric sheets for the selected songs (PDF format)
-
Full script (PDF format)
Work samples from musical podcasts, musical film or TV scripts, musical video games, or any other content forms that the creator(s) would call a "musical," in addition to stage musicals, are entirely welcome. Submissions will reviewed by a panel of industry members. The selected writer or writing team will receive a $3000 commission for the first draft of a piece of their choosing from GLG's slate of projects in development, culminating in an industry reading in late 2025. Finalists will be selected by early February 2025, and all applicants will be notified of their status.
